Tui is located on a rocky promontory on the northern banks of the Miño river. Its privileged location is the reason behind the events that led to the transformation of the city's image, from the primitive Castellum Tude to modern day Tui.

One of the city's main assets is the fact that it is set within an extraordinary cultural landscape: the bordering Miño river. It was the sum of all these features that led the historical ensemble of Tui to be legally recognised in August 1968 as a Cultural Interest Site (Spanish acronym: "BIC").

The historical city consists of several elements which define its identity: the walls, the medieval streets, the Cathedral, and the Miño river.
