The Carballo Bastion and Battery, next to the gate of the same name, form part of the remaining city fortifications. They were built in the seventeenth century during the War of Restoration of the portuguese monarchy. Built on the south side of Tui, the Battery and the system of fortifications south of the city, were intended to protect against possible attacks from the neighbouring fortress of Valença.
